The Book of Legends

Every region · every old text · every argument

For Palash — Keeper of the Old Stories.

From the third floor of the Canalave Library to the Unown walls of Alph, from the Old Verses buried in Hisui to the tapestries of Hammerlocke and Heath's blacked-out pages: the oldest stories in the Pokémon world, told exactly as the old texts tell them. Where the records disagree, this book shows you both sides. Where a story is in no record at all, this book says so.

0 Before you begin

Climb to the Third Floor

In Canalave City, Sinnoh, there is a library with three floors. The top one is set aside for a single subject: the myths and legends of the Sinnoh region. That is where this book begins.

Down on the second floor, readers grumble that the books are too difficult. A sign asks you not to eat or drink. On the ground floor sits Lucian of the Elite Four, who says that the thoughts written in books can reach across time and space. And up on the third floor, one quiet reader puts it best of all: every book holds someone's memories of other places and other times, so a library is the place where all those places and times are gathered together.

Professor Rowan once climbed those same stairs. He gathered his three young assistants on that floor to tell them about the "mirage Pokémon" of Sinnoh's lakes, and he wondered aloud whether a legendary Pokémon that never evolves is already complete as a creature. Moments later, an explosion at Lake Valor shook the whole city.

This book is a third floor of its own. It holds the oldest stories in the Pokémon world, from the Egg at the beginning of everything to the four masks of a mountain village in Kitakami. But a legend-keeper has to be honest, so before you start, here is how to read it.

Three kinds of evidence

📕 The Pokédex

Researchers in every region record what they learn. They don't always agree, and sometimes one region's Pokédex says the exact opposite of another's. Both get shown here.

📜 The old texts

Books in libraries, carvings on statues, Plates of stone, Braille on cave walls, tapestries, murals, diaries and twenty buried poems. These are the oldest voices we have.

🗣️ The tellings

What people say: elders, storytellers, Gym Leaders, professors, and sometimes villains. A telling can be wise, mistaken or deliberately twisted. Watch who is talking.

The Keeper's ruleIf the old texts disagree, you get both. If a story you've heard isn't in any record, you'll be told. And if nobody knows the answer, this book will say "nobody knows". That happens more often than you might think.

1 Sinnoh

In the Beginning

Before there was a Sinnoh, before there were people or Pokémon, before there was even a "before", there was chaos, and something waiting inside it.

The Original Story

On the third floor of the Canalave Library, among the books of myth, sits an ancient volume called The Original Story. It is short. It tells the beginning of everything in three parts, and it never once uses a Pokémon's name. Here is what it says, told closely.

THE ORIGINAL STORY · PART ONE

In the beginning there was only chaos, swirling and endless. Then, at the very heart of it, an Egg appeared. Out of the Egg came the Original One.

PART TWO

The Original One made two beings from itself. Time began to turn. Space began to spread. Then it made three more living things from itself.

PART THREE

The two beings wished, and matter came into being. The three living things wished, and spirit came into being. The world was made. And the Original One fell into a deep, unbroken sleep.

The Original Story · third floor, Canalave Library, Canalave City
Look closelyThe book says "two beings" and "three living things" and "the Original One". It never says Dialga, Palkia, Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf or Arceus. Those names were matched to the story later by people who studied it: a Hiker who collected Plate carvings, and the myth researcher Cynthia. The match fits beautifully, but it is a reading of the book, not words in it.

JOHTO POKÉDEX

⚖️ Researchers disagree

The Sinnoh records

Arceus shaped the universe, or shaped the world. Careful words: a sculptor works with something that is already there.

The Hisui record

Hisuian mythology calls Arceus the creator of all things. A much bigger claim, and an older one, written down long before Sinnoh had its modern name.

And the thousand arms? Only one Sinnoh record mentions them, and it says "mythology describes". Arceus walks on four legs. Myths are allowed to be strange.

Stone tablets found all over Sinnoh

What the Plates say

All across Sinnoh, people have dug up ancient stone Plates with words engraved on them. To a trainer, a Plate is a stone tablet that powers up one type of move. To a Hiker who studies how people came to be (travellers have met him in Oreburgh Mine, and later in the Canalave Library), they were something far more interesting: a scattered book. He copied every engraving, and gathered the lines into a book of his own called Sinnoh's Beginning as Told on Plates. Then he gave it to the Canalave Library, where it sits on the second floor.

Put in order, the eight lines read like a second, stranger telling of The Original Story. Tap each tablet to read its line.

💡 Theory corner: the Hiker's big idea

The Hiker didn't stop at copying. His theory is that the world began when the spirit within people was born, and that time and space were once a single thing inside that spirit. He also believes people and Pokémon once shared one spirit and "took each other's place". He matches the "three beings" to the three Pokémon of Sinnoh's lakes, and he calls Arceus the Original One. Someone told him the Flame Plate was made at the same time as Sinnoh itself.

⚖️ Two Pokémon, two theories each

Dialga and time

Did time start when Dialga was born, or does it keep flowing with every beat of its heart? Sinnoh's records say both, in different places.

Palkia and space

Did Palkia's birth tear down the walls of the world, or does space stay steady because Palkia breathes? Again, both are written down.

Notice the Hisuian words, too: Dialga was worshipped, Palkia was feared.

Celestic Town · "The Past Lives"

The Painting in the Cave

High in the mountains sits Celestic Town, which people say is the oldest town in Sinnoh. It was founded to honour the Pokémon of the distant past ("or at least that's the legend," the locals add). The town sign reads The Past Lives. Long ago, Old Charms were made here in honour of a mythical deity said to have created Sinnoh, and one resident will tell you plainly that people believe a Pokémon made the whole region. Cynthia's grandmother is the town elder.

Inside the Celestic ruins is an ancient cave painting. Before you read what anyone thinks it means, look at it yourself.

A sketch of the painting's shape. Three strange things in a triangle, a shining sphere in the middle.

Guess first

Which Pokémon would you put at the three corners? And what is the light in the middle?

Why the painting is protectedWhen the villain Cyrus threatened to destroy the painting, the elder made a point that's worth remembering. It isn't protected because it's old. It's protected because it holds the memories of people and Pokémon.

Two shining orbs

After trouble broke out on Mt. Coronet, the Celestic elder searched the town's shrine and found a very old book. It said that whoever holds the shining Adamant Orb can call Dialga, "the guardian Pokémon of time", to Spear Pillar, and whoever holds the shining Lustrous Orb can call Palkia, "the Pokémon that binds the spatial dimensions". The elder's conclusion: people long ago must really have met both Pokémon.

💎 Adamant Orb

A brightly gleaming orb meant for Dialga. It boosts Dragon- and Steel-type moves.

🔮 Lustrous Orb

A beautifully glowing orb meant for Palkia. It boosts Dragon- and Water-type moves.

🌑 Griseous Orb

The third orb belongs to Giratina, the Pokémon you'll meet in the next chapter. It boosts Dragon- and Ghost-type moves.

ECHOES ACROSS TIME

In the Celestic ruins there is also a giant, faded etching of a Pokémon-like creature. Its words are recorded in two forms. One says that time never stops flowing through past, future and present. The other says that space is ever-expanding dimensions, and that our spirits are like space.

Here is the remarkable part. The very same lines turn up in Old Verse 15, one of twenty poems dug up from the ground in Hisui, long before modern Sinnoh. These words are far older than modern Sinnoh.

Etchings in the Celestic ruins · Old Verse 15, Hisui

Where Sinnoh's and Johto's legends meet

Time, Space and Antimatter

In a snowy land, where the snow freezes travellers to the core, stand the Sinjoh Ruins. Cynthia explains that long ago, people came from Sinnoh to live there, and she thinks they must have built a temple there while longing for home. That, she says, is why it is called the Sinjoh Ruins. It was built by the Sinnoh people to honour Arceus, and it has been waiting for Arceus for hundreds of years. An old man at the ruins' cabin adds that the ruins inherited legends from both the Ruins of Alph in Johto and Spear Pillar in Sinnoh.

One of Hisui's Old Verses even compares the two places: "Certainly the land of Hisui bears some resemblance to Sinjoh." Read the next line carefully, though. The place its writer calls the land "where the ancient Sinnoh people were born" is here: Hisui, where the writer was, not Sinjoh.

Arceus
AN ANCIENT DOCUMENT, READ ALOUD BY CYNTHIA AT THE MYSTRI STAGE

Time, space and antimatter, which together make what we call the world, shall be born when Arceus stands on the Mystri Stage.

The Sinjoh Ruins

Cynthia explains the three words. Dialga is the guardian of time. Palkia is the master of space and dimensions. Giratina rules the world on the opposite side of ours, "the world of antimatter". The circle at the centre of the stage stands for Arceus, "the origin of it all".

The stage allows a single Arceus and nothing else. So a trainer brought an Arceus up onto the Mystri Stage, chose one of the three circles, and stood in the middle of it. A shining sphere appeared. "Could it be... an Egg?" Cynthia wondered. It was not. The mysterious round object took the shape of a Pokémon: Dialga, Palkia or Giratina, whichever circle had been chosen.

The old man at the cabin says that people in Johto believe Pokémon Eggs are vessels of life, and Arceus is said to have come out of an Egg. Cynthia, watching, went further: an Egg is the cradle of every being, and in a sense, she said, the planet itself is an Egg.

A word to watch"Antimatter" is a genuine old word for Giratina's domain, but it comes from this Sinjoh document. Sinnoh's own texts call that place the Distortion World, or "the reverse side" of our world.

The Flute and the Stairway

Sinnoh's great mountain, Mt. Coronet, is said to be called "the origin of Sinnoh". A climber will tell you that one theory says the region began right there. A Celestic resident calls it the place in the whole region that is closest to the sky and to space. Hisui's Old Verses speak of "heaven's crown" and "heaven's mount", nearest to almighty Sinnoh. One verse says people and their Pokémon carried stone up to the peak of heaven's mount and carved it into the shapes of ten Pokémon. The verses never name the mountain, but that verse was dug up at the Temple of Sinnoh, high on this very peak, so heaven's mount is almost certainly Mt. Coronet.

Then there is the Azure Flute. It makes echoing sounds that seem not to belong to this world, and nobody knows who made it. Play it at the very top of Mt. Coronet (at Spear Pillar in modern Sinnoh, or at the Temple of Sinnoh in Hisuian times) and a glowing stairway appears, climbing up to the Hall of Origin. That is where Arceus is met.

🔎 Myth-check: the beginning of the world

  • IN THE RECORDSAn Egg appeared in the chaos, the Original One came out of it, made two beings (time and space) and three beings (spirit), and shaped the world.
  • IN THE RECORDSHisuian myth calls Arceus "creator of all things".
  • NOT IN ANY RECORD"Arceus sleeps in the Hall of Origin, waiting for someone to play the flute." The Original Story says the Original One fell asleep, and the flute opens the stairway, but no text joins the two together. A Hisuian Plate line about listening "for the flute's song" is the closest hint.
  • NOT IN ANY RECORDThat Arceus personally created every single species of Pokémon, or created Mew, or created the Unown.

SINNOH'S MYTH

Three Pokémon dove into the lakes. Deeper and deeper they sank, without breathing, down to the very bottom. And they rose again carrying the power to make vast lands.

"Sinnoh's Myth" · Canalave Library

The book doesn't say who the three were. But Sinnoh has three great lakes, and each one is home to a small Psychic-type Pokémon that hardly anyone has ever seen. Readers have matched them up for a very long time.

There's another old book, this one kept in a house in Celestic Town, that tells of the moment each of the three was born. Amazingly, almost the very same poem was dug out of the ground in Hisui, where it was called Old Verse 6. The same words survived from the age of Hisui to the age of modern Sinnoh.

📜 The same words, centuries apart

A Celestic Town resident once told a young trainer from Twinleaf that Mesprit "may well be watching over you".

A Horrific Myth

One book on the third floor is called, simply, A Horrific Myth. It gives three warnings about "the Pokémon", and never says which Pokémon it means. Turn each one over, if you dare.

"A Horrific Myth" · Canalave Library

💡 Theory corner: which warning belongs to which Pokémon?

The book never says. Many scholars of the Canalave books give the eyes to Uxie, the touch to Mesprit and the harm to Azelf. The first one fits Uxie's own Pokédex entry about its eyes very well. The other two are guesses. And the numbers are exact: an instant, three days, five days. If someone tells you "seven days", they're remembering a retelling, not the book.

💡 Theory corner: one Egg for three?

One Pokédex account, repeated in several regions, says it is thought that Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf all came from the same Egg. "It is thought" means it's a theory. The Original Story says the Original One made the three "from itself" and says nothing about an Egg for them. The two ideas don't really clash, but neither one proves the other.

The Mystery of the Lakes

Cynthia came to Lake Valor to study its folklore. There is supposedly an island inside the lake, she says, and inside that island is the "mirage" of a Pokémon, and no one may enter that Pokémon's chamber. Professor Rowan calls the three lake Pokémon "mirage Pokémon" too. Visitors at Lake Valor say the lake Pokémon will never appear if it senses humans nearby.

Then came the explosion at Lake Valor. Afterwards, caverns appeared in the middle of the other two lakes as well, and Team Galactic's own members took that as proof that Sinnoh's three lakes are somehow connected.

Dialga OR Palkia never both at once
The balance, as Cyrus described it at Spear Pillar and Cynthia confirmed it.

That same Celestic Town resident, in the elder's house, says the three lake Pokémon are said to have strong and compassionate spirits, and that the power of their spirits maintains the natural balance of Sinnoh. At Spear Pillar, of all people, Cyrus explained the rule: all three together are needed to balance either Dialga or Palkia, but they cannot hold both at once. Cynthia agreed they can keep the balance against either one, and then asked a sharp question: does that mean they can't do the same with Giratina?

The forgotten third

The Pokémon Whose Name Was Never Spoken

At Spear Pillar, at the peak of Mt. Coronet, Cynthia revealed what her study of the myths had shown. When the world was made, Dialga and Palkia appeared, and with them came one more Pokémon of equal power. Its name was never to be spoken. It was said to lurk in a world on the opposite side of ours. Its name was Giratina.

Later, inside that other world, she added that Giratina's legend had been almost completely forgotten, remembered only by a few. Even Cyrus, who knew so much about Dialga and Palkia, had only ever seen it as a shadow.

Now remember The Original Story. It tells of two beings, and three. It never mentions a third great being at all. Perhaps that silence is the forgetting.

JOHTO POKÉDEX

Laventon recalls a Hisuian verse about a powerful light creating a deep shadow, and imagines that the shadow is Giratina. In its Origin Forme it loses its legs, and he thinks it probably comes from a world where heaven and earth are one, though he admits he cannot prove it.

HISUI POKÉDEX · LAVENTON

⚖️ Who banished Giratina? What the texts actually say

Sinnoh's Pokédex

Giratina "was banished for its violence". It does not say who banished it.

The Hisuian Plates

The Spooky Plate says the Original One gave the other side of this world to its "raging third". The Zap Plate says the third being raged and rained down bolts of anger.

Hisuian events

Giratina held a grudge against Arceus, and teamed up with a man named Volo to drag Arceus out of hiding. (That story is in the next chapter.)

Put together, the evidence points to the Original One sending Giratina to the other side. But no Sinnoh text names who did it. And notice the words: violence, raging. Not one text calls Giratina "evil".

Inside the Distortion World

Very few people have ever been to Giratina's world and come back to describe it. Cynthia is one of them. She says there are no other Pokémon there. Time does not flow. Space is unstable, and the rules are broken. Slabs of rock float in the air and move when you step on them, and she wondered whether "down" even means down in a place like that. She suspected the whole world might be a giant puzzle that Giratina uses to test its visitors.

She wasn't entirely alone. Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf appeared there and helped show the way. Portals from the Distortion World lead back to Spear Pillar and to Turnback Cave.

⚖️ Hero against villain: two theories in the Distortion World

Cyrus's theory

The Distortion World and our world are like the two strands of DNA, each needing the other to exist, and the "shadowy Pokémon" keeps them in balance. He even claimed that the Distortion World is that Pokémon, so capturing or defeating it would make that whole world disappear.

Cynthia's answer

She called that a lie. Giratina, the Distortion World and our world would not disappear. Her view: Giratina was enraged because both worlds were in danger, so it joined them together at Spear Pillar, and that is what caused the distortion.

Modern Sinnoh

The Red Chain at Spear Pillar

Spear Pillar stands at the peak of Mt. Coronet. That is where Cyrus, leader of Team Galactic, brought a Red Chain. It was made from crystals his team had taken from the three lake Pokémon, plus a copy built with technology. He used it to summon and bind Dialga and Palkia, so that he could make a brand-new world without spirit.

Team Galactic's own reports, stored on a computer at their Veilstone headquarters, say that the lake Pokémon and the Pokémon of Mt. Coronet are connected, and that capturing the lake Pokémon frees the Pokémon of Mt. Coronet.

At the top of the mountain, everything went the way Cyrus had planned. With his two Red Chains he called out Dialga, the master of time, and Palkia, the master of space and dimensions, and told them they would do his bidding. The incomplete and ugly world we have now, he said, could disappear. He was resetting everything to zero. Nothing as vague and incomplete as spirit would remain.

Then three small Pokémon arrived: Uxie, the Being of Knowledge; Azelf, the Being of Willpower; and Mesprit, the Being of Emotion. They were the very Pokémon whose crystals had been forged into his chain. Cyrus sneered. It takes all three of them, he said, to balance the Pokémon of time or the Pokémon of space, and here were both. Their coming was in vain.

And then Cyrus felt something: a pressure. Something, somewhere, was enraged. A shadow appeared among the ancient pillars. "So," said Cyrus, "there is a Pokémon that can only appear as a shadow." He still believed he held all the power. He was wrong. The shadow was Giratina, and it seized Cyrus and dragged him away, out of this world and into its own.

A villain's history lessonThe same reports claim Sinnoh was formed by an explosion in ancient times, caused by a deity Pokémon's power. Remember who wrote that. Team Galactic's reports are not the most trustworthy book in this chapter.

The Faded Words of Turnback Cave

Beyond the Sendoff Spring lies Turnback Cave. Cynthia says the spring is believed to lead, somehow, to "the great beyond". At the cave's entrance is an inscription so faded that only pieces can be read. Deep inside is Giratina's chamber. In later times a portal to the Distortion World was found there too, described as a place where two worlds overlap: one where life sparkles, and one where life has faded.

THE FADED INSCRIPTION AT THE ENTRANCE

… past three pillars … to the sleeping … before 30 is surpassed …

(another reading of the faded letters begins "offer up … to the …")

Turnback Cave, Sinnoh
Remember the cemeteryOne Sinnoh record says Giratina appears in an ancient cemetery. A cave you reach through a "send-off" spring, at the edge of the great beyond… The old texts never spell it out. They don't need to. In Hisuian times, Giratina in its Origin Forme was met in a Turnback Cave on the Cobalt Coastlands.

Old Customs and Strange Little Myths

SINNOH REGION'S MYTHOLOGY

When Sinnoh was newly made, people and Pokémon lived apart, but they traded goods and helped each other. One Pokémon proposed that Pokémon should always be ready to help humans, and always appear before them. And that is why, even now, Pokémon appear when people walk into tall grass.

SINNOH MYTH · THE LOST NAMES

An old saying: do not show anger, do not give in to sorrow, or ??? will come near. Happiness is joy that comes as naturally as air. May such people be blessed by Master ???.

Canalave Library · the same idea appears in Hisui as Old Verse 18, with the same blanks

🕳️ Why are the names blank?

The names really are missing from the text, and nobody has filled them in. But the Diamond Clan of Hisui handed down something very similar as Dialga's wisdom: do not give in to sorrow or anger, and do not bring almighty Sinnoh to sorrow, because then the flow of time will stop.

VEILSTONE'S MYTH

A careless young man once got hold of a sword. In those days people relied on Pokémon to feed their villages, but he hunted them without care and threw away what he didn't use. The next year, no Pokémon appeared at all, and the food ran out.

He searched far and wide and at last found a single Pokémon. It told him that Pokémon would fight back with claws and fangs against anyone who brought swords to harm them, and it apologised for having to. The man understood that power had blinded him to the fact that Pokémon are alive. He broke his sword and begged for forgiveness. Then the Pokémon vanished, "to a place beyond seeing".

"Veilstone's Myth" · Canalave Library

💡 Theory corner: who was the Pokémon?

The book never names it. Some scholars think it was Giratina: Veilstone isn't far from Turnback Cave, and "a place beyond seeing" sounds a lot like the Distortion World. It's a good theory. It's still only a theory.

SINNOH FOLK STORIES

One. In the oldest days, people who took Pokémon from the sea or a stream for food would clean the bones, give thanks, and return them to the water. And the Pokémon, the story says, would come back whole. (Hisui's Old Verse 9 describes the same custom of setting bones adrift on a river.)

Two. A Pokémon in a forest would take off its hide to sleep as a human, then put the hide on again to roam the villages.

Three. Long ago, Pokémon and people were so close that they ate at the same table, and there was no difference between them at all.

"Sinnoh Folk Stories" · Canalave Library
Connect the dotsStory Three sounds a lot like the Hiker's theory from Chapter 1: that people and Pokémon once shared a single spirit and "took each other's place".
3 Hisui

The Age of the Nobles

Long before it was called Sinnoh, this land was called Hisui. Two clans argued over a god, twenty poems lay buried in the ground, and one day a crack opened in the sky.

Jubilife Village · the Ancient Retreat · the Temple of Sinnoh · the three lakes

One god, two clans, an old argument

Almighty Sinnoh

In the age of Hisui, two clans lived in the land. Their ancestors had crossed the sea to get there, and both clans worshipped a god they called almighty Sinnoh. One day, that name would belong to the whole region.

The trouble was that they disagreed about what almighty Sinnoh was. The Diamond Clan, led by Adaman from their settlement in the Crimson Mirelands, believed it was the god of time. The Pearl Clan, led by Irida from their settlement in the Alabaster Icelands, believed it was the god of space. They quarrelled about it constantly. Both clans even claimed the name "Celestica", although neither was descended from the vanished Celestica people who had really carried it.

An old woman named Cogita, who kept Hisui's myths, put it simply to a young traveller: the two clans' beliefs together make up the universe, and neither can exist without the other. And in the end, the truth was bigger than either clan. The real almighty Sinnoh was Arceus. Each clan had mistaken one of its creations (Dialga for the Diamond Clan, Palkia for the Pearl Clan) for the god itself. Adaman and Irida came to realise that the quarrel had been between the two of them, not really between their clans.

Twenty Poems in the Ground

All over Hisui, people dug up old poems: the Old Verses. There are twenty of them, and something about them is very strange. They all appear to be in the same handwriting, as if one person wrote all twenty. And they turned up buried all across the land.

OLD VERSE 1

Two figures: one who watched over time's steady pace, and one who watched over the far reaches of space. Each walked its own separate path, yet both walked with almighty Sinnoh.

Dug up in Hisui
OLD VERSE 5

A lament. The Celestica people and their town disappeared long ago. New peoples sailed in, each devoted to a different idea of Sinnoh. They fought bitterly, and took the Celestica name for themselves. The name lives on, but its heart does not.

Dug up in Hisui

🕵️ Who wrote the twenty poems?

No verse is signed. But Old Verse 12 ends with its writer waiting, "for an eternity", for "the one with the mission". Someone who has been waiting a very long time, for a very particular person… Many who study the verses think of Cogita, the keeper of myths. No text says so. Keep the question open, and keep reading.

Old Verses 3, 4, 10 and 11

The Ten Who Were Struck by Light

WHAT THE VERSES TELL

Once, humans were weak. They had no claws, no fangs, no strength. Then bolts of light fell ten times and struck ten Pokémon, and those ten became loyal partners to people. Was it a gift from great Sinnoh? The verses ask, and do not answer.

Later, a hero led the ten against "the almighty unknowable", and proved the strength of humankind. The unknowable approved, and returned to its "domain of no place". Then people carried stone up to the peak of heaven's mount and carved statues of the ten.

Old Verses 3, 4, 10 and 11, Hisui

The statues stood at the Temple of Sinnoh, built with stone from the Ancient Quarry. Hisui's noble Pokémon are said to be descended from the ten, and clan wardens cared for them, offering them food and water. Here are the ten the statues show.

CarefulThe verses never say who "the almighty unknowable" is. It's tempting to say Arceus. But the text doesn't, so this book won't either.

The crisis

A Crack in the Sky

In the days of Hisui, an enormous space-time rift tore open above the peak of Mt. Coronet. It could be seen from every corner of the land. Smaller space-time distortions began to appear here and there, bringing rare Pokémon and strange objects with them. The noble Pokémon went into frenzies. Unusually large "alpha" Pokémon appeared. As the crisis grew, even the colour of the sky changed.

And the rift pulled a person out of another time and dropped them into Hisui. They fell out of the sky.

THE TRAVELLER'S OWN ACCOUNT, AS LATER TOLD

Pulled out of their own time, the traveller woke in a realm beyond time and space. There, a blindingly bright Arceus spoke to them. It sent them to Hisui with a single task: seek out all Pokémon. It promised they would meet again. Afterwards, the traveller's phone carried the same task. People called it the Arc Phone.

The traveller who fell from the sky, a member of the Galaxy Team's Survey Corps
Rare wordsArceus almost never speaks in any record. This is one of the very few times anyone has said it did.

The Red Chain That Was Given

Cogita had a story she had kept for a long time: the gifts of the three lake guardians, brought together at the Shrouded Ruins, would form a Red Chain able to "bind the world". So the traveller went to each lake in turn, and before every visit people remembered the old belief that when each guardian first flew, humankind gained emotion, will or knowledge.

In modern Sinnoh: taken

Heaven's mount

The Temple, the Origin Ball and a New Name

At the Temple of Sinnoh, on the peak of Mt. Coronet, the Red Chain wrapped around Dialga (or Palkia) as it came through the rift. It broke free and had to be caught. Then its counterpart arrived in an Origin Forme and smashed the temple and its ten statues. That Pokémon was calmed and caught with the one-of-a-kind Origin Ball, made from pieces of the broken Red Chain, some Origin Ore and an ordinary Poké Ball. And the rift closed.

⚖️ Accounts differ

Volo: the Merchant Who Wanted to Remake the World

Volo was a cheerful merchant of the Ginkgo Guild. He often helped travellers on the road, and he learned Hisui's myths from Cogita. Nobody suspected a thing.

Secretly, Volo wanted to meet Arceus, take its power, and destroy and remake the world. So he sought out Giratina, which held a grudge against Arceus, and had it tear open the space-time rift to draw Arceus out of hiding. He had even kept the last Plate for himself: the Spooky Plate.

Giratina in its Origin Forme

At the ruins of the Temple of Sinnoh he finally showed his true face and battled with Giratina, which took its Origin Forme. He lost. He handed over the Plate and walked away, swearing he would keep trying no matter how many centuries it took. At the moment of his defeat, the traveller's Celestica Flute changed into the Azure Flute: a sign that Arceus had chosen them, not him. Later, Professor Laventon heard from Volo that Giratina had changed its heart after its defeat.

🔎 Myth-check: Volo and Cogita

  • NOT IN ANY RECORDThat Volo or Cogita is an ancestor of Cynthia of modern Sinnoh. No text links their families.
  • ONLY A HINT"Volo lives forever." All we have is his vow to keep trying "no matter how many centuries" it takes.

A Sacred Plate… Used as a Cutting Board

Cogita lived alone at the Ancient Retreat and kept Hisui's legends. She said she had to pass them on, whether or not they were true. Here is the best part: without knowing it, she had been using the Pixie Plate, a piece of the creation story itself, as a cutting board in her kitchen.

She knew about the forces of nature, and she revealed that she had once travelled Hisui with Enamorus. In the end she gave away the Reveal Glass, saying she had nothing left to pass on.

🕵️ The twenty poems, again

Remember Old Verse 12's writer, waiting "for an eternity" until "the one with the mission" appears? A traveller fell out of the sky with exactly one mission, given by Arceus itself: seek out all Pokémon. And Cogita, keeper of Hisui's myths, said she had to pass the legends on, then gave away the Reveal Glass because she had nothing left to pass on. Old Verse 17 tells of a god of spring, and Cogita once travelled Hisui with Enamorus. If Cogita wrote the verses, she had found the one she was waiting for. No text says so. But the pieces fit.

Professor Laventon's notes · Old Verse 17

The Gods of Field and Spring

Professor Laventon's Hisui notes tell of the wind and the lightning. Thundurus has fought Tornadus "since time immemorial", and its lightning enriches the soil. Tornadus is said to turn the seasons by stirring up the air, and Laventon suspects its humanlike form is not its true one. When the two clash, Landorus arrives to end it, and afterwards the land has rich harvests.

And then there is Enamorus, the Love-Hate Pokémon. It flies in from across the sea to end Hisui's bitter winter, and legend says its love makes new life bud all over the land.

Riddle of Old Verse 17

The verse tells of "a god of field" and "a god of spring" riding Hisui's winds, and of a spring god that leaves simply because it doesn't like the cold. Who do scholars of the verses think the god of spring is?

Diaries and Omens

Kanto's greatest legend isn't carved in stone. It's scribbled in a diary, left behind in a burned-out mansion on a volcanic island. And over Kanto's mountains fly three birds that people have watched for signs since long ago.

One more Kanto record sits right in the middle: Mewtwo's DNA is almost the same as Mew's, but its size and its nature are very different. The diary-writer and the Pokédex researchers don't agree on how Mewtwo came to be. Which would you trust?

The Two Towers

Ecruteak City once had two tall towers facing each other across the town, and a great flying Pokémon roosted on top of each. Then lightning struck, and the city's history changed forever.

Two Towers, Nine Tiers Each

About seven hundred years ago, the people of Ecruteak built two towers, one in the east of the city and one in the west. Each rose nine tiers high. They were built, the sages say, to foster friendship and hope between Pokémon and people. The western tower, the Brass Tower, was said to awaken Pokémon. The eastern tower, the Tin Tower, was where Pokémon were said to rest.

A book called History of Ecruteak, kept in a house in the city, says that each tower was the roost of a powerful flying Pokémon. Sage Masa of the Wise Trio adds that an immense, silver-coloured Pokémon was said to roost on top of the Brass Tower, and the sign at the Tin Tower says that a legendary Pokémon is said to roost there.

One tower, two namesOld Johto records call the eastern tower the Tin Tower. Today most people call it the Bell Tower. The name "Brass Tower" comes from the account of Sage Masa of the Wise Trio.

Three Who Were Reborn

This is the heart of Johto's legends, and the sages of the Tin Tower tell it like this.

When the Brass Tower burned, three Pokémon with no names were lost in the fire. Then a rainbow-coloured Pokémon came down out of the sky. It was Ho-Oh. It gave the three new life, and they rose again as Suicune, Entei and Raikou.

An old man in Ecruteak says this legend has been handed down by Ecruteak's Gym Leaders, and Morty, the Gym Leader, says that whoever leads the Ecruteak Gym has to study Suicune, Entei and Raikou.

HISTORY OF ECRUTEAK

Three Pokémon, born of water, of lightning and of fire, once raced around the town. They could not contain their great power, so they ran off like the wind into the grassland.

A book in a house in Ecruteak City

The sages add something sad. When the three first rose, they frightened everyone who saw them, and some people even attacked them, which did no good at all. The three knew their own power. They ignored the frightened people, and they fled. That's why, ever since, the three beasts have roamed and run instead of staying in Ecruteak.

A researcher named Eusine chased Suicune for ten years. He heard that Ecruteak's legendary Pokémon test chosen humans by letting them come close, and that Suicune's mystic power summons the rainbow-coloured Pokémon. One Tin Tower sage believes Suicune is the beast closest to Ho-Oh, and he has heard there may be a link with the Unown too: he thinks they must share a cooperative bond with Suicune. The Wall of Letters

A Puzzle With No Builder

The scientists at the Ruins of Alph Research Center say the ruins are about 1,500 years old, and that no one knows who built them or why. The Research Center was founded by Professor Silktree, whose photo still hangs on the wall, and its computer counts the years of study: it reads Exploration Year 10. Outside the ruins, one visitor admits that nobody even knows whether the Pokémon statues mean anything.

After years of work, one researcher came to a surprising conclusion: the ruins seem to have been built as a home, a habitat, for Pokémon.

Four Chambers, Four Hidden Words

The ruins have four small chambers. Each holds a sliding stone-panel picture of an ancient Pokémon, a carved description, and, on the far wall, a word written in Unown letters. Explorers discovered that each word is a key: do what it says, and a hidden room opens. Read the carving, guess the word, then tap the chamber to check.

🌈 One of the four chambers in a 1,500-year-old ruin shows Ho-Oh, and will only open for someone who brings one. Whoever built the ruins knew about Ho-Oh long before the Brass Tower burned.

Messages From a Vanished Clan

Solve the panel puzzles and Unown letters are revealed, scratched into the floor of the underground hall. Put together, they tell the story of a clan that once lived in the ruins. Different researchers have copied the messages down with slightly different wording, so here is what they say, told closely.

THE FLOOR MESSAGES

The clan engraved its words in this place, to remain here for the ages.

The clan built a Pokémon statue outside.

The Unown have great insight, great power of mind. They shun the outside world.

Humans must learn to walk in harmony with the Unown. And so, for the Unown's sake, the clan departed.

📓 The Unown Report

The researchers keep a notebook of their findings called the Unown Report. Solving a puzzle woke the Unown. A radio switched on inside the ruins picks up strange signals, which the researchers take as proof that the Unown talk by radio waves. There are 26 kinds, like the letters, and two more were found later: the ! and the ? forms.

The last page says that Unown once lived in the ruins alongside "relatives of humans", who made the statue in the lower levels. The Unown are timid and never leave. And the people who wished that humans and Unown could live together again… have all gone.

In a small room, a floor inscription reads in full

Researchers across the regions have written exactly seven different Pokédex entries about Celebi. (Some regions copied another region's wording, so you may see the same entry in more than one place.) Here are all seven.

ENTRY 1 OF 7

It roams across time. Forests where it has appeared grow lush with grass and trees.

JOHTO · ALSO KANTO AND KALOS
ENTRY 2 OF 7

When it vanishes deep in a forest, it is said to leave behind an Egg that it brought back from the future.

JOHTO · ALSO KANTO
ENTRY 3 OF 7

"Revered as a guardian of the forest, Celebi appears wherever beautiful forests exist."

JOHTO POKÉDEX
ENTRY 4 OF 7

It crossed over time from the future. People believe a bright and shining future awaits, as long as Celebi keeps appearing.

HOENN POKÉDEX
ENTRY 5 OF 7

It has the power to travel across time, but it is said to appear only in peaceful times.

SINNOH · ALSO UNOVA AND KALOS
ENTRY 6 OF 7

It can move through time. Records that describe it as a forest deity have been found from many different eras.

GALAR POKÉDEX
ENTRY 7 OF 7

It travelled here from the future. It strengthens grass and trees with its own power, and it can also heal wounds.

GALAR POKÉDEX · ANOTHER RECORD

⚖️ Where the seven records part ways

Where does it come from?

Johto, Kanto and Kalos say it wanders across time. Hoenn and one Galar record say it came from the future. A wanderer, or a visitor?

What is it called?

Only two titles come from the Pokédex: a guardian of the forest (Johto) and a forest deity (Galar). "The forest's protector" comes from the shrine and the people of Azalea, not from any Pokédex.

And a gentle one: Sinnoh's record says it only appears in peaceful times, while Hoenn's says that as long as it keeps appearing, a bright future awaits. Put those together and Celebi sounds like a good sign wherever it shows up.

🥚 The mystery of the Egg from the future

Read Entry 2 again. When Celebi vanishes into a forest, it is said to leave behind an Egg it brought back from the future. Now here is the strange part: Celebi has never been found to be male or female, and no Celebi has ever been found with an Egg of its own. So whose Egg is it? What hatches from it? Is it another Celebi, carried back to be born in the past?

No record says. The entry itself is careful, too: "it is said". This is one of the great unanswered questions of the Pokémon world, and this book is not going to pretend to answer it.

The first record of the shrine opening

The Restless Forest

The young trainer had only just become Champion when it began. At the Pokémon Center in Goldenrod City, the receptionist had news: as a special deal, a GS Ball had been sent just for them.

It was a mysterious Ball, and nobody seemed to know what it was for. So the trainer took it to the one person in Johto who might: Kurt, the craftsman of Azalea Town who makes Poké Balls out of Apricorns.

Kurt stammered. He had never seen one. It looked a lot like a Poké Ball, he said, but it seemed to be something else. He offered to check it, and for a whole day he stopped making his Apricorn Balls to study it. When visitors came by, his granddaughter told them that Grandpa was checking a Ball, and she was waiting till he was done.

The next day, Kurt had something to report. While he was checking it, the ball had started to shake. There must be something to it, he said, and he rushed out of the house. Out in town he cried that Ilex Forest was restless. He handed back the GS Ball and asked the trainer to find out why.

The forest was not itself. Strong winds were shaking its big trees. In the gate on Route 34, a teacher blocked the north entrance: something was wrong in Ilex Forest, she said, and people should stay away for now. Deep among the trees, a girl wondered aloud whether something had happened to the forest's guardian.

At the shrine, the trainer read the old inscription again, and noticed something new: a hole in the shrine, exactly the shape a GS Ball would fit into. They set the ball inside, and stepped back in surprise.

Celebi was there.

It was a single chance. Had the trainer turned and run, the protector would never have come back. But when Celebi was caught, Kurt appeared in the forest. Fantastic, he said. The legends about the shrine had been real after all! What he had just seen made him want to make even better Balls, and off he hurried to make them. Behind him, the big trees of Ilex Forest stood still again.

What the GS Ball really wasFor all that it looked like a Poké Ball, the GS Ball never held a Pokémon. It was a key. Its only use was to be placed in the shrine to call Celebi, and once it was set there, it was gone.

The second record of the shrine opening

Celebi's Time Travel

The second record is stranger still. It is the only account in which we can say exactly where in time Celebi went: a trip into the past, three years back, and then forward again.

It began, of course, with a warning at the shrine. Follow the trip, one stop at a time.

Celebi's time trip · four stops

📄 Professor Oak's paper

In New Bark Town, Professor Elm has heard that Celebi has been sighted in Ilex Forest. He remembers that Professor Oak once wrote about Celebi and Time Travel in a research paper presented at a conference. Celebi's mystic Time Travel power, Elm explains, lets it go to the past and the future.

⏳ "Time Travel" is a power, not a move

The friend's grandpa told them that Celebi travels through time using a mystic power called Time Travel. You won't find it in any list of battle moves. It is something Celebi is, not something Celebi uses in battle.

The Pichu With the Spiky Ear

Pichu

Sometimes a Pichu can be found playing beside the Ilex shrine. An old man there says it has lived in the forest for some time. But one of its ears is spiky, unlike any other Pichu's.

Professor Elm finds that ear very strange. He believes the Pichu was affected by travelling far through time with Celebi. He warned the Pokémon Centers about it. Their database has no record of this kind of Pichu, so the Communication Club won't let it in and it cannot be traded. And one more puzzle: it loves its trainer dearly, yet it never evolves into Pikachu.

Celebi in the Field Notes

🍃 An ability and moves that suit a time traveller

Its ability, Natural Cure, heals its own status conditions when it leaves a battle: a fitting gift for a Pokémon one record says can heal wounds. Celebi has no move of its own that no other Pokémon learns. But look at what it can learn: Future Sight hits the target with a mass of psychic energy two turns after it is used, an attack thrown into the future. Leaf Storm whips up a storm of leaves. Healing Wish lets it faint so that the Pokémon taking its place is fully healed. It also learns Ancient Power, Heal Bell, Recover, Leech Seed, Magical Leaf, Life Dew, Baton Pass and Perish Song.

🐛 Strong and weak

As a Psychic and Grass type, Celebi takes four times the damage from Bug moves. It is weak to Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Ghost and Dark, and it resists Water, Electric, Grass, Fighting, Ground and Psychic. A guardian of the forest, with the forest's smallest creatures as its greatest weakness.

🌸 The pink one

A rare, differently coloured Celebi is pink instead of green, with green eyes and green-tipped antennae.

🏞️ Where it settles

In Sinnoh's Pal Park, where Pokémon brought from far away are given a new home, Celebi settles in the Forest area. Of course it does.

The silent regionsThe Pokédexes of Alola, Hisui, Paldea and Kitakami have no entry for Celebi at all. Hisui's records, so full of gods and Plates, say nothing about a forest protector who travels through time. Perhaps it simply didn't appear. Sinnoh's record does say it appears only in peaceful times…

🔎 Myth-check: Celebi

  • IN THE RECORDSGuardian of the forest. Forest deity. The forest's protector. These are the titles the records use.
  • NOT IN ANY RECORD"The Voice of the Forest". It's a lovely name, but no Pokédex, inscription or local ever calls Celebi that.
  • NOT IN ANY RECORDA glowing "crack of time" inside the shrine. The shrine has one thing: a hole that fits a GS Ball.
  • NOT IN ANY RECORDThat Celebi lives inside the shrine, or that the shrine brings good luck and keeps evil spirits away.

Part Two

Jirachi, the Wish Pokémon

Somewhere, right now, Jirachi is almost certainly asleep. It has probably been asleep since long before your great-great-grandparents were born, and it will probably still be asleep long after your great-great-grandchildren are grown up. Then, one day, it will wake. And it will stay awake for one week.

No. 0385JirachiSteelPsychicWish Pokémon
Jirachi

Legend says that when it awakens, it will make come true any wish written on the notes attached to its head. If it senses danger, it will fight without waking up.

HOENN POKÉDEX

Its look: a yellow, star-shaped head with three points. On each point hangs a teal note. Two yellow streamers flow from its back.

Every Jirachi Entry in Every Pokédex

Researchers have written nine different entries about Jirachi. Most of them repeat the same great promise, that it grants wishes, and notice how carefully almost all of them choose their words: "legend says", "it is said", "people believe". But almost every record also adds one new detail of its own.

📜 What each record adds

🛡️ It fights in its sleep. If it senses danger, it will fight without waking up. (Hoenn, first record)

💎 A crystal shell. While it sleeps, a tough crystalline shell covers its body to protect it. (Hoenn, third record)

🎵 A pure voice wakes it. Sing to it in a voice of purity, and it wakes from its thousand-year sleep. (Hoenn's second record, and Galar's first)

📅 Seven days in a thousand years. Or "one week", in the older Sinnoh words. (Kanto, Sinnoh, Galar)

📝 The wishes go on its notes. A wish written on a note on its head will come true when it awakens. (Hoenn's first record, Johto, and Galar's second)

👪 An old, old belief. Generations of people have believed it. (Johto)

⚖️ What the nine agree on, and what they don't

What they share

Six of the nine mention the thousand years (Hoenn's first and third records and Johto's don't). Eight of the nine mention wishes (Galar's first record speaks only of the pure voice and the seven days).

How does it wake?

Only two records say: a voice of purity, singing (Hoenn), and a pure singing voice once every 1,000 years (Galar). The other seven never say what wakes it at all.

Did a wish ever come true?

Not one Pokédex says a wish was actually granted. Every entry that mentions wishes says "legend", "it is said" or "people believe".

📝 Notes, not tags

The Pokédex calls them notes: notes attached to its head. Three points, three notes. If you've heard them called "wish tags", that's a nickname. The records always say notes.

💎 A shell, not a cocoon

Only one record describes how Jirachi is protected while it sleeps, and it uses exactly these words: a tough crystalline shell. Inside it, Jirachi can even fight off danger without waking.

A little arithmetic of legends

How Long Is a Thousand Years?

📅 About 365,000 days

That's how many days are in a thousand years. Jirachi is awake for seven of them.

😴 52,000 to 1

For every single day Jirachi spends awake, it spends roughly 52,000 days asleep.

⏱️ Under 2 seconds

Squeeze all thousand years into one 24-hour day, and Jirachi would be awake for about 1.7 seconds of it.

The three notes · write a wish

Jirachi, asleep

Jirachi is asleep. Its three notes are blank.

Your notes stay tied on in this book until you untie them. Legend says Jirachi reads them when it wakes. The legend doesn't say when that will be.

No record anywhere describes anyone stumbling on a wild, sleeping Jirachi. There is just one account of a Jirachi passing from hand to hand. In flower-filled Floaroma Town in Sinnoh, a Jirachi was once given to a young trainer. (A Mew was once given to a young trainer in the very same town. Floaroma, it seems, is full of surprises.)

Where does Jirachi sleep? The Pokédex entries never say. Records of Pokémon habitats list it among the mountains, and in Sinnoh's Pal Park it settles in the Mountain area.

Jirachi in the Field Notes

☀️ Doom Desire: its very own move

Only Jirachi learns it. It's a Steel-type move, and its effect arrives late. Hoenn's description says it summons strong sunlight that attacks two turns later. Later descriptions say a concentrated bundle of light blasts the target two turns after it is used.

🌠 The wish-maker's ability and moves

Its ability, Serene Grace, doubles the chance that its moves' extra effects happen: a lucky ability for a wish-maker. Wish (from the very start) restores health, but takes a turn to work. Swift fires star-shaped rays that never miss. Meteor Mash is a punch fired like a meteor. Cosmic Power draws mystical power from space. It also learns Gravity, Healing Wish and Future Sight.

🛡️ Strong and weak

As a Steel and Psychic type, Jirachi is weak to Fire, Ground, Ghost and Dark. Poison can't touch it at all. Psychic moves do only a quarter of their damage, and it also resists Normal, Grass, Ice, Flying, Rock, Dragon, Steel and Fairy.

🌸 The pink one

A rare, differently coloured Jirachi has a pinkish body, red notes on its head, and red marks under its eyes instead of teal ones.

The silent regions, againJust like Celebi, Jirachi has no entry in the Pokédexes of Alola, Hisui, Paldea or Kitakami. And one more warning for Galar: the Wishing Stars and Wishing Pieces of Galar are tied to Dynamax power. No record connects them with Jirachi. Jirachi's wishes go on the notes on its head.

🔎 Myth-check: Jirachi

  • IN THE RECORDSA pure singing voice can wake it. That is the only way the records describe.
  • NOT IN ANY RECORDA comet that wakes Jirachi when it passes. No Pokédex mentions any comet at all.
  • NOT IN ANY RECORDAn eye on its belly that opens. Its body does show a closed seam across the belly, and no researcher has ever explained it. No Pokédex mentions it.
  • NOT IN ANY RECORDThat it sleeps in space, or that it grants exactly three wishes.
  • NOT IN ANY RECORDA wish that actually came true. The legend is very, very old. The proof is still asleep.

Why this book puts them togetherNo old text, no inscription and no Pokédex ever links Celebi and Jirachi. Putting them side by side is this book's own idea, because together they tell you everything legends have to say about time. Every fact in the chapter comes from the records. The pairing is ours.

Here is what makes them such a perfect pair. Celebi moves through time. Jirachi lets time move past it. One visits yesterday and tomorrow, and forests grow green behind it. The other waits a thousand years in a crystal shell for a single week of being awake, while people below write their hopes on paper and hope.

And both of them, if you look at the records closely, have something in common with every good legend in this book: we know exactly what people say about them, and almost nothing about what they are.

8 Hoenn

Land, Sea and Sky

Hoenn's oldest legend is one of the few in this book that changed while people were watching. The storyteller who guards it had to tell it again, differently, because the old telling had turned out to be missing someone.

Mt. Pyre · Sootopolis City · the Cave of Origin · the Sky Pillar · Meteor Falls · Southern Island

The summit of Mt. Pyre

A Legend That Was Rewritten

Mt. Pyre is where the people of Hoenn come to calm the spirits of Pokémon that have passed away. From its summit you can see all of Hoenn. At the top lives an old woman whose job is to pass Hoenn's legends on to the people of the future, and for a long time she told the legend one way.

Then came the crisis in Sootopolis. Afterwards, she said the legend had been rewritten.

THE OLD TELLING

Long ago, the Pokémon of the land and the Pokémon of the sea fought fiercely. The land Pokémon raised mountains and made continents. The sea Pokémon raised great waves and carved out oceans. The world was swallowed by fires and storms. Then the light of the Blue Orb and the Red Orb calmed the two. In one telling they dove deep into the sea and disappeared; in another, they burrowed deep under the ground and disappeared.

Two Orbs That Must Never Be Separated

The keepers at the summit of Mt. Pyre guard two glowing orbs said to hold an ancient power, with a deep link to the Hoenn region. The orbs, they say, must never be separated. One telling says the Blue Orb was found buried inside the Cave of Origin in Sootopolis; another says it was the Red Orb. Either way, the orb's Pokémon seems to be linked to that cave.

The keepers also say something strange: the orbs' true owner is said to still exist. Nobody knows whether that owner is a human or a Pokémon.

⚖️ Accounts differ: which orb calms Kyogre?

Later accountsThe Blue Orb, which brings about Kyogre's Primal ReversionThe Red Orb, which protects people and calms Kyogre

Groudon's story is the mirror image: swap every Red for Blue. Every account agrees on one rule: keep the two orbs together. In the later accounts, Primal Groudon holds the Red Orb and Primal Kyogre the Blue.

Giving them backIn one account of the crisis, the Aqua leader held up the Red Orb and begged Kyogre to calm down. It didn't respond. The Magma leader begged Groudon to stop. Afterwards, both leaders brought the orbs back to Mt. Pyre on their own, and the keeper decided that perhaps they weren't so evil after all. In another account, a single leader returns the one orb he stole, and admits that humans cannot freely control the balance between land and sea.

Voices from the Crater

Sootopolis City is built inside a volcanic crater, so when you stand in the city and look up, the sky is a perfect circle. Its sign calls it the mystical city where history sleeps. Inside the city is the Cave of Origin. Its guard says the spirits of Pokémon calmed at Mt. Pyre are said to come back to life in there, and only a trainer chosen by Wallace may enter.

During the crisis, the people of Sootopolis watched giant Pokémon smash into each other right in the middle of their city, while the weather swung back and forth between blazing sun and pouring rain, until a green Pokémon came down from the sky and ended it. One resident remembered an ancient legend that land and sea were shaped by a colossal battle between Pokémon, and said: I saw it happen with my own eyes.

The One That Never Comes Down

Wallace, who was once the Gym Leader of Sootopolis, explained it in the Cave of Origin. Groudon and Kyogre are "super-ancient" Pokémon, and there is a third: Rayquaza, which is said to have calmed the two fighters long ago. When Steven saw it, he marvelled that the two rampaging giants had fled from it.

The door is sealed, and only the worthy may enter: the Draconid Lorekeepers, and descendants of the ancient people of Sootopolis, like Wallace. A mural runs up the full height of the tower, recording Rayquaza's deeds. A Pacifidlog resident says it's simply too scary to climb that high.

Mega Rayquaza

What the Draconids Tell

The Draconids are an ancient people of Dragon-type trainers whose home was the waterfall of Meteor Falls. Their last Lorekeeper, Zinnia, told their history while climbing the Sky Pillar, and the tower's mural tells it too. Here it is, as the Draconids tell it.

THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO

The world overflowed with natural energy, and Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre fought over it. Meteors fell on the Draconids' waterfall home, shining with rainbow light, and Rayquaza came down from the heavens and stopped the pair.

A THOUSAND YEARS LATER

A huge meteoroid struck and carved out the crater that would become Sootopolis. It woke the Primals again.

THE FIRST MEGA EVOLUTION

The people prayed. The great meteorite shone like a giant Key Stone, and Rayquaza underwent the very first Mega Evolution, and calmed them.

AFTERWARDS

The Draconids built the Sky Pillar, and passed down a prophecy: in another thousand years the meteors would return, bringing one big enough to break the world.

✨ The elder's telling

The Draconid elder at Meteor Falls says that in great disasters, the Lorekeeper would make a wish to Rayquaza before a stone glowing with rainbow light. Rayquaza's body filled with light and it changed. Only later did people give that change a name: Mega Evolution.

Δ A visitor's name

Draconid lore remembers a tall visitor from a distant land who called Mega Rayquaza "Δ", Delta. The visitor said it was born from the world's disturbances and would calm them. The lore doesn't say who the visitor was.

The prophecy comes true

The Meteoroid and the Visitor From Space

When a giant meteoroid was heading straight for the planet, Zinnia called Rayquaza to the Sky Pillar. But Rayquaza could not Mega Evolve: over the years, the meteorites inside its body had lost their power. Then a young trainer's Meteorite began to glow. Rayquaza swallowed it, and together they flew to the very edge of space and shattered the meteoroid.

A triangular fragment was left floating there. And out of it burst Deoxys, attacking.

There, at the very edge of space, the young trainer battled it from Rayquaza's back. When the battle was over, they came back down to the top of the Sky Pillar, and far below, the scientists of the Mossdeep Space Center found that the meteoroid was gone. Remember what the records say about Deoxys: an alien virus is said to have fallen to earth on a meteor. This time, the meteor never reached the ground.

One Sinnoh record

Regigigas made Pokémon that looked like itself, from a special ice mountain, rocks and magma.

Johto's record

It shaped Regirock, Regice and Registeel from clay, ice and magma.

Only Johto's record pairs each material with a golem: clay, ice and magma for Regirock, Regice and Registeel. The Sinnoh record just lists a special ice mountain, rocks and magma, and names no golem at all. Lined up side by side, they seem to agree on magma and differ on rock versus clay, but that matching is a reader's guess. You decide.

The Statue Deep Under Snowpoint

In Snowpoint City, Sinnoh, stands Snowpoint Temple. People say it was built in ancient times to honour the Pokémon of rock, ice and steel that shape the land, and only "the chosen" may go inside. The locals have a story about their own city: Pokémon dragged Snowpoint City to the place where it stands now, and the temple is their resting place.

At its very deepest level, five floors down, stands a powerful statue. Engraved on it is a riddle about a body of rock, a body of ice and a body of steel. When the three gather, it says, "the king" will appear.

Voices in the ruins

The statue at the bottom of Snowpoint Temple is Regigigas, and its engraving calls it "the king". In Sinnoh's three other ruins of rock, ice and steel, a voice from a statue uses a different title for the giant. What is it?

🗿 "Our Master"

Sinnoh has three more ruins: the Rock Peak Ruins on Route 228, the Iceberg Ruins on Route 217 and the Iron Ruins on Iron Island. In each one, a voice comes from a powerful Pokémon statue. It tells visitors to walk on every lit tile together with "our Master", and if the visitor's companion isn't strong enough, it tells them to grow stronger. Regirock, Regice and Registeel call Regigigas their master. Snowpoint calls it the king. Same giant, two titles.

The temple, long agoIn Hisuian times the same temple stood above the Pearl Clan's settlement in the Alabaster Icelands, and Hisuian Braviary roosted on its roof. Its floors held puzzles of rock, ice and steel statues, and Regigigas waited behind a sealed door. But back then it woke when three Plates were brought to it (the Stone Plate, the Icicle Plate and the Iron Plate) instead of the three golems.

The Sealed Chamber

Deep under the sea off Route 134 lies the Sealed Chamber, and its walls are covered in Braille, writing made of raised dots that you read with your fingertips. The inner chamber tells a story. Here it is, told closely.

THE WALLS OF THE SEALED CHAMBER

We lived in this cave, and we owed everything to the Pokémon. But we sealed that Pokémon away, because we feared it. Those who have courage and hope: open a door. An eternal Pokémon waits.

(A later, longer telling adds that the powerful Pokémon had lived alongside the people, and was sealed away alone, in the dark.)

10 Unova

Truth, Ideals and the Third Dragon

Unova was founded by twin heroes and a single dragon, or so the old story goes. But in Unova, the most important question isn't "what happened?" It's "who is telling it, and why?"

Opelucid City · Castelia City · Icirrus City · Dragonspiral Tower · Lacunosa Town · the Abundant Shrine · Liberty Garden

As told by Drayden, Gym Leader and mayor of Opelucid City

Twin Heroes and One Dragon

Long ago, before there was a Unova, there was a single dragon Pokémon. It helped two heroes, twin brothers, bring a new region into being. The older brother sought truth. The younger brother sought ideals.

But the brothers began to fight over which of them was right, and their quarrel split the young region in two. In that desperate hour, the dragon split its own body in two as well: into a white Pokémon and a black Pokémon. Reshiram, who seeks truth and a new world of goodness. Zekrom, who pursues ideals and a new world of hope.

Drayden ends the story with his own thought: ideals and truth don't need to be opposed at all.

But there is a darker ending, and it was told in Opelucid too. In that telling, Drayden says the two dragons, once the same being, battled on and on until they were exhausted, and that the twin heroes declared that no one side was right and stopped fighting. Then Iris took up the story. The two heroes' sons, she said, started the battle again. In an instant, Reshiram and Zekrom destroyed Unova with fire and lightning. And then the two dragons disappeared.

Team Plasma's speech (Ghetsis)

In front of Castelia City's Gym, Ghetsis told it with one hero, who wanted to unite a land full of warring people. A single dragon, white in one telling and black in another, shared its knowledge and bared its fangs at enemies, and together they united everyone's hearts. Team Plasma, he said, would bring back the hero and the dragon to win people over.

Ghetsis left out a whole hero and the quarrel. A legend with one hero and one dragon is much easier to use if you want people to follow you. Watch who is telling the story.

Dragons That Became Stones

The people of Icirrus City tell more. The legendary dragon shared its wisdom with its hero, and fought their foes with fire (if it was Reshiram) or lightning (if it was Zekrom). Hero and dragon were as close as parent and child, and that, people say, was the beginning of ancient Unova.

When the dragon's body was lost, it became a stone: the Light Stone for Reshiram, the Dark Stone for Zekrom. And it waited, patiently, for a new hero.

Reshiram
A darker lineAlder, Unova's Champion, standing outside Dragonspiral Tower, remembered another part of the myth: that the dragon, together with the other one, devastated ancient Unova in an instant. It is the same ending Iris told in Opelucid.

🗼 The oldest building in Unova

Dragonspiral Tower is the oldest structure in Unova, standing since long before Unova itself was founded. No one knows its history. It is said that on its top floor, the legendary dragon waits for a person who seeks truth, or one who pursues ideals.

N, the young king of Team Plasma, said that Reshiram and Zekrom were once a single life: complete opposites, and yet the same. Each appears before the hero it recognises. After his defeat, N wondered something new. If two heroes lived at the same time, one pursuing truth and one pursuing ideals, could they both be right?

Then Drayden asks a question out loud. Could Kyurem be just a husk, a shell left over after the split?

Notice that it's a question. Now listen to a very different story.

A LACUNOSA TOWN FOLK TALE

Long ago, a huge meteorite fell from the sky and made the great hole behind the town, the Giant Chasm. A terrifying monster was hidden inside it. At night it came into the village on a freezing wind and stole people and Pokémon away. So the villagers built high walls, and made a rule: no one goes out after dark. Even now, the people of Lacunosa stay indoors at night.

Told by an elderly storyteller of Lacunosa Town, who tends to fall asleep in the middle of it

Lacunosa's town sign says the town values safety through order and routine. And Professor Juniper wondered something else. Zekrom was revived from a rock called the Dark Stone (Reshiram, in another telling, from the Light Stone). Suppose the meteorite in the old tale and that stone were one and the same? Elements from the same era turn up at both Dragonspiral Tower and the Giant Chasm.

Later, the storyteller's own grandchild came to a conclusion: Grandma's stories had really been about Kyurem, it seems.

🔎 Myth-check: the third dragon

  • NOT IN ANY RECORD"Kyurem is the empty shell of the original dragon", said as a fact. It's only Drayden's question.
  • IN THE RECORDSTwo different origin stories: Drayden's "husk" question, and Lacunosa's monster that came with the meteorite. Even the storyteller's family now thinks the monster was Kyurem, but no record says which origin is true.

Wind, thunder and the earth that calms them

The Forces of Nature

Unova's records are blunt. Tornadus zooms through the sky at 200 mph (about 320 km/h), and its storms can blow houses away. Thundurus leaves scorched remains wherever it passes and causes forest fires, so people dislike it. Landorus, though, is different: its energy enriches the soil and makes crops grow huge. The Pokédex says it has been hailed as "The Guardian of the Fields".

An old farmer in Unova grumbles that Thundurus brings thunder and Tornadus brings heavy rain, and their wild storms ruin his crops. But he remembers when he was young: a certain Pokémon, Landorus, taught the two of them a lesson near his home, and for about thirty years afterwards they stayed calm and quiet. He's heard there's a shrine to Landorus somewhere on Route 14.

🗣️ Eyewitness · an elderly farmer, remembering his youth

There is. The Abundant Shrine stands in the remains of an old village reached from Route 14, and the place still feels the way it must have when people lived there. The locals say the Great Landorus protects the land, bringing rich soil and good harvests. The children tell how Landorus stopped Tornadus and Thundurus when their storms were damaging houses and fields all across Unova. One villager adds a detail: long ago, the two rampaged in their Therian Formes, and just when everyone had given up hope, Landorus appeared out of nowhere, also in its Therian Forme, and stopped them.

⚖️ Which form is the real one?

The Abundant Shrine

The Reveal Glass kept at the shrine is said to return the three to their "original appearance". But even the shrine's own people don't know whether the Incarnate Forme or the Therian Forme is the true one.

Professor Laventon suspected Tornadus's humanlike form is not its true one. (Remember Cogita gave away a Reveal Glass in Hisui too.)

Smaller legends of Unova

Victini of Liberty Garden. Two hundred years ago, an ultra-rich family bought an island off Castelia City, named it Liberty Garden, and meant it as a place where people and Pokémon could live freely. Someone wealthy built a hidden room under the island's lighthouse to protect Victini from people who wanted to misuse its power, though Professor Juniper felt that shutting it away was a mistake. Team Plasma tried to take it. Victini creates endless energy and shares it with those who touch it, and it is said that Trainers with Victini always win. In the Unova Pokédex it alone carries the special number zero, ahead of every other Pokémon in Unova.

Victini
Genesect

Genesect, the hunter rebuilt. More than 300 million years ago, Genesect was feared as the strongest of hunters. That's ancient. But its legend is a modern one. Team Plasma scientists revived it from a fossil and changed it with science, upgrading (or attaching) the cannon on its back. Their own king, N, rejected the work, saying science damages the natural beauty of Pokémon, so the research was stopped and the lab closed. One defeated scientist admitted he had forgotten that a scientist's duty is to make the world happy, and he handed over the Drives made for Genesect.

Meloetta and the lost melody. An old man in Castelia remembers a tale his mother told. There was a Pokémon that played a melody and danced so lightly that it filled hearts with joy. Then sorrow darkened the whole world, and the melody was lost. And at the very same time, somewhere, a pair of red shoes was lost too. When the Relic Song is remembered, Meloetta switches between its Aria Forme and its Pirouette Forme. Its melodies can make listeners happy or sad, and many famous songs were inspired by them.

Told from a cell in Lysandre Labs

The Man, the Pokémon and the War

A very tall man named AZ was being held prisoner in a cell in Lysandre Labs. From that cell, he told a story about a man who lived long ago.

Long ago, he said, there was a man who loved a Pokémon very much. Then a war began, and the Pokémon was taken away to fight in it. Years later, the man received only a tiny box.

He wanted his Pokémon back, no matter what it cost. So he built a machine that gave it life again. But his anger didn't fade. He could not forgive the world. So he turned the machine into the ultimate weapon, and became the destroyer who ended the war.

And the Pokémon he had brought back? It realised that the lives of many Pokémon had been taken to restore its own. And it left him.

Read it gentlyAZ never says exactly what was in the tiny box. He doesn't have to. Later, in Geosenge Town, he added one more line about the man in the story: he became a hollow shell of himself, doomed to wander forever.

⚖️ The legend people tell, and the story AZ told

Lysandre's telling

In the telling handed down to Lysandre, the king of Kalos wanted to take everything for himself. He built a terrible weapon and unleashed the fire of destruction. Lysandre said he was descended from the king's younger brother, but admitted that a 3,000-year-old story might not be fully reliable. He even claimed the weapon had washed the world clean of that era's "filth".

AZ's telling

Not greed: grief. A man whose Pokémon was lost in a war, who brought it back, and who could not forgive the world for taking it.

One story makes the king a villain. The other makes him heartbroken. Both end with the same weapon.

Before you read on

Who was the man in AZ's story?

Who Was the Man in the Story?

Lysandre noticed two things. AZ shared the name of a king who lived 3,000 years ago. And around his neck, AZ wore the key to the ultimate weapon.

Later, after AZ battled the new Champion in Lumiose City, he said that he finally felt free. And then his Floette came back to him, and AZ said it had been 3,000 years. The man in the story was AZ himself, the ancient king, kept alive all that time by his own machine.

The flower and the weapon

An Eternal Floette

AZ's Floette with the Eternal Flower

AZ's Floette is no ordinary Floette. It carries a unique flower, the Eternal Flower, and it was given eternal life along with AZ. It left him 3,000 years ago, and it came back only when his heart was finally freed. The ultimate weapon itself is shaped like a giant flower.

Ordinary Floette, the Single Bloom Pokémon, tend wilting flowers and draw out their hidden power. Some records say a Floette never forgives anyone who ruins a flower bed.

⚖️ Scholars disagree: what powered the weapon?

AZ's words

Using the weapon required the life force of many Pokémon. Lysandre adds that the device was first meant to bring a Pokémon back to life.

In modern Kalos

When Team Flare reawakened the weapon, they fed it energy taken from a Legendary Pokémon, Xerneas or Yveltal.

Professor Sycamore later had a theory: that Mega Stones formed 3,000 years ago, when certain stones were bathed in Legendary Pokémon energy fired from the weapon. A theory, not a fact. And Hoenn's Draconids tell their own, very different story of the first Mega Evolution (Chapter 8).

Three thousand yearsRemember that number. In Chapter 13, Galar's Darkest Day is also dated to about 3,000 years ago.

💡 Theory corner: a visitor in Hoenn?

Remember Chapter 8? Draconid lore remembers a tall visitor from a distant land who named Mega Rayquaza "Δ". AZ is a very tall man, doomed to wander forever, who has been wandering for 3,000 years. No text says the visitor was AZ. But a man who wanders forever could have wandered as far as Hoenn.

The Poem of the Broken Sky

In the Malie Library there is a book of verse called The Light of Alola. It is said to come from the collection of Acerola's family. More than one copy survives, and the copies don't quite agree. Here is what the poem tells, in this book's own words.

THE LIGHT OF ALOLA

The empty sky broke open, and through the hole came a single beast.

In one copy, it is the beast that devours the sun, and it shines like the sun. In the other, it is the beast that calls the moon, which stole the light of the heavens.

Alola's king bowed before it. The island guardians fought it, and lost.

Then the beast of the sun and the beast of the moon together brought new life: a fragile heir, born in Alola, whom the guardians would protect. And the ancient kings sang their thanks with the song of a flute, and two tones rang out across the altar.

The Beast That Devours the Sun, the Beast That Calls the Moon

The poem's story came alive again in our own time. Alola has two flutes. The tones of the Sun Flute are said to have been offered in thanks to the Legendary Pokémon of the sun, and those of the Moon Flute to the Legendary Pokémon of the moon. At the far end of Vast Poni Canyon on Poni Island stands an altar (the Altar of the Sunne, or of the Moone) said to be closely tied to the Legendary Pokémon of local folklore.

There, the Sun Flute and the Moon Flute were played together, and two tones rang out across the altar, just as the poem says they once did for the ancient kings. A girl named Lillie had a Cosmoem she called Nebby. On the altar, it evolved, and the beast of the old poem stood there again: Solgaleo, or, in the other telling, Lunala.

☀️ Solgaleo · Psychic Steel

Writings from the distant past call it "the beast that devours the sun". Its body gives off light so intense it can make the darkest night as bright as midday.

🌙 Lunala · Psychic Ghost

Writings from the distant past call it "the beast that calls the moon". It absorbs light, and draws the dark of night over the day.

A strange recordThe Alola Pokédex records that Solgaleo is said to be a male evolution of Cosmog, and Lunala a female one. But both are known to be neither male nor female. "It is said" is doing a lot of work there. And notice the old spelling the records keep: Sunne and Moone.

A myth from another world

The Blinding One

Some legends come from beyond the sky. The Ultra Recon Squad (Dulse, Soliera, Zossie and Phyco) come from Ultra Megalopolis, a world without light. They told the story of their world like this.

Once, the light of Necrozma, whom they call the Blinding One, filled their world and gave energy to many beings across Ultra Space. But their ancestors grew greedy and tried to control all of Necrozma's light. It only hurt Necrozma. It lost part of itself, ran wild, and stole all the light it could find. Their people built technology, the Megalo Tower, to keep Necrozma quiet and make a little light for themselves. And they have lived in darkness ever since.

A city that lost its sun because it wanted to own it. Of all the warnings about greed in this book, it may be the clearest.

💡 Theory corner: where did Z-Power come from?

The Ultra Recon Squad's records say that Tapu Village is where Necrozma fought the tapu long ago, when it came to Alola hungry for its light. After studying Alola, the squad came to a conclusion: Z-Power, and the aura of Totem Pokémon, both came to Alola as Necrozma's light. Remember the library book that said a Legendary Pokémon gave the tapu "a great power of unknown origin"? Maybe its origin isn't so unknown after all.

Three shapes in the dark. Who are they? Follow the clues.

Every child in Galar learns the legend of the hero with the sword and the shield. It turns out the legend was wrong, and a researcher named Sonia worked out the truth one clue at a time. Follow her clues.

Motostoke · Turffield · Hammerlocke · Stow-on-Side · Circhester · the Slumbering Weald · the Crown Tundra

Clue 1 · the Budew Drop Inn, Motostoke

The Statue Everyone Knows

In a hotel in Motostoke stands a statue of the hero who once saved Galar. Sonia, the granddaughter of Professor Magnolia, explains the legend everyone in Galar learns. Long ago, a great black storm covered Galar. People called it the Darkest Day. Gigantic Pokémon attacked the land. But a single young hero, carrying a sword and a shield, defeated them.

Nobody knew what sort of sword and shield they were. Nobody knew what the black storm really was. Keep both questions in your pocket.

Clue 2 · the hillside at Turffield

A Giant on the Hill

Carved into a hillside at Turffield is a huge geoglyph of what looks like a gigantic Pokémon. The part that showed the black storm has mostly worn away. Sonia supposes people 3,000 years ago could just have imagined giant Pokémon, but she thinks it looks far too much like Dynamax to be a coincidence. That's where the date comes from: the Darkest Day happened about 3,000 years ago.

Clue 3 · the Hammerlocke Vault

Four Tapestries, Two Heroes

In the vault at Hammerlocke, cared for by Gym Leader Raihan, hang four old tapestries that tell how a kingdom in Galar was created. Look at them in order.

I

Two youths watch a Wishing Star.

II

A disaster strikes, and the two are bewildered.

III

The two watch the sword and shield stop the disaster.

IV

The two youths are crowned.

Two things to noticeSonia spotted the first one straight away: the tapestries clearly show two heroes, while the statue shows only one. Now look at tapestry III again. The youths don't hold the sword and shield. They watch them.

Clue 4 · Stow-on-Side and Circhester

The Mural Behind the Mural

The great mural at Stow-on-Side was said to tell the story of Galar's hero. But it was a replica. When it was broken (during some trouble caused by a young trainer named Bede), much older ruins were revealed behind it. They showed what looked like two Pokémon, holding a sword and a shield as if using them.

Sonia put it together. There really were two heroes. And the sword and the shield were Pokémon.

V · TORN

A fifth tapestry, hanging in a Circhester restaurant called Bob's Your Uncle. The heroes look sad, and there is no sword or shield.

Sonia's guess about the fifth tapestry: once their duty was done, the sword and shield went into some kind of sleep. And Circhester's Hero's Bath is said to be where the two heroes soothed their wounds after the battle.

One question bothered her most of all. If the truth was right there in the artwork, why was it hidden?

Clue 1 left a question open: what was the great black storm of the Darkest Day? Make your guess before Clue 5.

Clue 5 · in our own time

The Storm Comes Back

The last clue did not come from a tapestry or a mural. It came in our own time. Chairman Rose of Macro Cosmos brought about a new Darkest Day, and Galar finally learned the answer to the second question in your pocket. The black storm had never been a storm at all. It was a Pokémon: Eternatus, which had come to Galar inside a meteorite 20,000 years before.

Two young trainers stood against it. And the heroes of the tapestries woke to help them: Zacian, the sword, and Zamazenta, the shield. About three thousand years after the first Darkest Day, the old story happened again, and this time people saw with their own eyes who the real heroes were.

A new Darkest Day. The sword and shield wake again, and Eternatus is stopped. Wishing Stars now power the Dynamax Bands that trainers wear.

Who gets to tell history?

The Book, and the Brothers Who Hated It

Sonia published a history book, Galar: A History, saying the real heroes of the Darkest Day were Pokémon. Not everyone liked it. Two brothers, Sordward and Shielbert, called themselves "the new kings of Galar" and claimed to be descended from the first kings. They called her book lies. They said one of their own ancestors had made the old replica mural, and accused Sonia of changing history. To "prove" Zacian and Zamazenta were brutes, they even tried to drive them wild with Galar particles.

One young hero. A real sword and a real shield.

What Sonia found

Two youths, who were crowned afterwards. And two Pokémon heroes, Zacian and Zamazenta: the "sword" and the "shield".

  • NOT IN ANY RECORDThat the two original youths were brothers. The records say "two youths". The brothers in this story are the modern Sordward and Shielbert.
  • NOT IN ANY RECORDThat Galar's Wishing Stars have anything to do with Jirachi. (See Chapter 7.)

In ancient times it ruled Galar as a merciful king. It heals and blesses, mends hearts, and makes plants spring up.

GALAR POKÉDEX

In the snowy Crown Tundra, Calyrex is remembered as the King of Bountiful Harvests. The village of Freezington has a statue of it, which at first was missing its crown, and the Crown Shrine stands on top of the tallest mountain in its honour. But as people forgot about it, and as its loyal steed left it, its power faded. To speak to anyone, it borrowed the body of a man named Peony, who afterwards only half-remembered meeting it. With the Reins of Unity, Calyrex was reunited with its steed.

Glastrier

❄️ Glastrier

Intense cold pours from its hooves. It takes whatever it wants by force, and its ice mask is said to be 100 times harder than diamond.

Spectrier

👻 Spectrier

It senses everything without using sight. Its kicks are said to separate soul from body, and it gallops through the night absorbing the life force of sleeping creatures.

👑 A king whose power faded because people forgot him. It's the opposite of the hero statue in Motostoke: a story that got told wrong because people remembered it too simply. In Galar, both forgetting and remembering can change a legend.

The Fairy Tale of the Four Treasures

At the great academy in Mesagoza (Naranja Academy in some accounts, Uva Academy in others), Ms. Raifort teaches history, and one of her lessons is a Paldean fairy tale.

There was once a king who loved collecting treasures, especially treasures from faraway lands. One day a merchant from the East laid four treasures out in front of him: a vessel, a sword, a set of tablets (wooden planks for writing on) and a string of beads. The king was overjoyed. He showered the merchant with gold coins and took all four.

But the four treasures were really four Pokémon. Passed from hand to hand, they had been tainted by hubris and greed, and the king's own greed finally woke them, as disasters. They rampaged, and the king's castle was destroyed. The king called on renowned Pokémon wielders, who after a fierce battle subdued the four and sealed them away, somewhere in Paldea.

Four Feelings That Took a Body

⚖️ The fairy tale and the Pokédex don't match

Ms. Raifort's tale

The treasures were tainted by hubris and greed. The greedy king is the one who suffers.

The Pokédex

The treasures are grudge, hatred, fear and envy. And Wo-Chien's entry says someone was punished for writing down the king's evil deeds.

So was the king a victim of the treasures… or did he cause them? The fairy tale doesn't say. The Pokédex hints.

The Great Crater of Paldea

A Million Years of Area Zero

OVER 1,000,000 YEARS AGO

The Great Crater of Paldea, Area Zero, is formed, according to studies of its rock layers. Legends say a treasure more valuable than anything else rests in its depths.

ABOUT 2,000 YEARS AGO

The Paldean Empire rules the region. Its emperor believes the treasure legend and sends people into the crater in droves. None reach the depths.

FOR ABOUT 1,000 YEARS

The Great Era of Exploration goes on, and drains the empire.

The empire and its neighbours unite to form Paldea.

The Area Zero Expedition, including the writer and natural historian Heath, claims to have finally reached the bottom.

TODAY

The crater is off-limits except on official business, and a research station stands in its depths.

Heath's Book

Heath wrote a book about the expedition, and a copy sits in the Academy lobby. (Not every copy of the book tells it in quite the same way.) Here is what he says the expedition found.

🔣 Strange symbols

Carved into the ground: perhaps by explorers from the days of the Paldean Empire, or perhaps by someone even older.

💎 A guarded treasure

Legends spoke of precious stones, or wondrous fruits, guarded by some kind of guardian.

🦣 Huge, ferocious beasts

In the lower layers of the crater. One was like a Donphan but far bigger, with great tusks. (Other copies describe it with treads of iron instead.)

🌿 Herba Mystica

Wondrous herbs the team named themselves. Pokémon that ate them grew into "Titan Pokémon".

🔩 An unscratchable plate

A buried metal plate that no tool could scratch.

✨ The cave of gemstone

At the very bottom, a cave of gemstone shining blindingly bright. Heath wondered whether that light was itself the legendary guardian.

And then the strangest part. Heath strayed from the team, and was found unconscious. When he woke, he was holding a page in his own handwriting that he did not remember writing. Many people simply did not believe his book.

The Treasure Was Alive

It is the source of the Terastal phenomenon. It protects itself by turning energy into hard crystals.

PALDEA POKÉDEX

It is thought to have lived in ancient Paldea until it got caught in seismic shifts and went extinct.

PALDEA POKÉDEX · ANOTHER RECORD

Heath's original manuscript tells what the published book left out. Separated from his team in the depths of the crater, he found a strange being. He couldn't tell whether it was a Pokémon, or even whether it was alive. It had a shell of overlapping hexagons, gleamed brighter than any gemstone, and as a whole looked like a brilliant disk. He named it Terapagos, and suspected its body was made of the very material that makes Pokémon shine and crystallise.

That whole section was blacked out of the published book. The original manuscript now belongs to Heath's descendant, Briar, who later told the story in her own book, The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero. The treasure more valuable than anything else wasn't gold or gems. It was a living Pokémon. Extinct, the records say, and yet one was found alive, deep in the Underdepths of Area Zero.

The land of Kitakami

The Ogre and the Loyal Three

In Kitakami, the villagers hold a Festival of Masks every year to honour three heroes. The heroes have statues. The ogre was driven back up its mountain. And the whole story is upside down.

The signboards at Loyalty Plaza and Kitakami Hall

The Legend of the Loyal Three

Long ago, a fearsome ogre lived on the mountain behind the village, and it frightened everyone who went there. One day it came down in a terrible rage. By luck, Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti were there, and they gave their lives driving the ogre back up the mountain. The grateful villagers named them the Loyal Three, buried them, and raised statues over the place. Every year since, Kitakami has held a Festival of Masks in their honour.

THE SECOND SIGNBOARD · THE OGRE'S FOUR MASKS

The ogre had four glimmering masks, and each changed the power of its cudgel. The teal mask brought withered greenery back to life. The crimson mask turned a candle flame into an inferno. The blue mask could stop a river. The ashen grey mask could break the hardest stone. Before they fell, the Loyal Three took three of the masks, and the ogre was greatly weakened.

Pecharunt

It stores poison in its peach-shaped shell and makes toxic mochi that draw out the desires and abilities of whoever eats them, binding them to its will.

PALDEA POKÉDEX

There was one more secret. The Loyal Three, the Retainer Pokémon, owe their powers to toxic chains. Okidogi's chain built up its muscles into a powerful body, and it can smash anything by swinging it. Munkidori's chain made its psychic powers bloom, and it makes foes dizzy from a safe distance. Fezandipiti's chain gives it its beauty and its lovely voice, and it scatters a scent that captivates people and Pokémon. And their master was Pecharunt.

For a long time, Pecharunt slept in Mossui Town, looking like nothing more than a decoration. Then it woke, and used its mochi to put the villagers under its control. The "real villain" of Kitakami's legend had been sitting in plain sight all along.

It didn't last. At Loyalty Plaza, right beside the statues of its old retainers, Kieran held back a crowd of mochi-controlled villagers while a young trainer from Paldea battled Pecharunt, defeated it and caught it. Everyone under its control was set free, with only vague memories of what they had done.

💎 The Crystal Pool

At the top of Oni Mountain lies the Crystal Pool, a faintly glowing lake whose crystals give off energy like Terastal energy. A Crystal Cluster from there was used to repair the chipped Teal Mask, and Briar, the same Briar who owns Heath's manuscript, studies the pool in her research into Terastallization. Kitakami's masks and Paldea's crater turn out to be part of the same mystery.
