The Big Book of Football

Book 2 · Next Level

⚽ For Saransh — now you're getting serious ⚽

You know WHO won everything. Book 2 is about HOW football works: positions, offside, skills, legends — and the greatest games ever played.

1 Chapter One

Every Team Needs Four Jobs

Eleven players, four different jobs. Here's a famous way to line them up — it's called 4-3-3.

GK D D D D M M M W ST W
GK

Goalkeeper

The ONLY player allowed to use hands — but only inside the big box. Job: stop everything. Like Dibu Martínez and his 11 saves.

D

Defenders

The bodyguards. They block shots, win headers and tackle strikers. Spain won the World Cup letting in just 1 goal — that's defending.

M

Midfielders

The brains. They run the most, pass the most and control the game. Rodri won a Ballon d'Or mostly by passing brilliantly.

ST

Strikers & Wingers

The goal-getters. Wingers fly down the sides like Yamal; the striker finishes like Mbappé. Their whole job: score.

New word

Clean sheet
When your team lets in ZERO goals in a match. Goalkeepers collect clean sheets like treasure.

2 Chapter Two

Offside, Finally Explained

The rule that confuses even grown-ups. You're about to understand it better than they do.

The rule in one line

When your teammate kicks the ball forward to you, at that exact moment you can't be closer to the goal than the last defender. Sneaking behind them early = cheating = offside!

✅ ONSIDE — goal counts!

GK D YOU PAL

You're level with the last defender when your pal passes. Perfect timing. Run and score!

🚫 OFFSIDE — flag is up!

GK D YOU PAL 🚩

You sneaked past the last defender BEFORE the pass. The linesman's flag goes up. No goal. So unfair? No — fair!

Why does this rule exist? Without it, strikers would just stand next to the goal all match waiting for long kicks. Boring! Offside forces clever runs and perfect timing.

New word

Through ball
A pass slipped BEHIND the defenders for you to run onto — timed perfectly so you're never offside. Messi's speciality.

3 Chapter Three

Cards, Penalties & the Ref

One person controls 22 superstars with just a whistle and two little cards.

Yellow card

A warning. Nasty tackle, pulling shirts, arguing too much. Collect TWO yellows in one match and…

Red card

OFF! You leave the pitch, no replacement allowed. Your team plays with 10. Even Ronaldo has had reds.

Penalty!

Foul inside the big box = a free shot from the spot, 11 metres out. Just you against the goalkeeper. Scariest moment in football.

VAR

Video referees watching on TV screens. They check goals, penalties and red cards — even 1 centimetre offside gets caught!

Wow fact: in a penalty shootout, players take turns from the spot until someone cracks. Remember Paraguay knocking out Germany? That's how — and goalkeepers become heroes.

New word

The wall
At a free kick, defenders line up shoulder-to-shoulder to block the shot. Free-kick masters curl the ball right OVER it.

4 Chapter Four

Skills to Practise Tonight

Every trick has a name. Learn them, practise them, then use them on your friends.

The Nutmeg

⚽⚽

Poke the ball between someone's legs and run around them. The most embarrassing thing you can do to a defender.

Try it: on a grown-up standing still

The Cruyff Turn

⚽⚽⚽

Pretend to kick, then drag the ball BEHIND your own leg and spin away. Invented by Johan Cruyff at the 1974 World Cup — defenders are still dizzy.

Try it: slowly, then speed up

The Rainbow Flick

⚽⚽⚽⚽

Roll the ball up one leg and flick it over your head — and over the defender too. A rainbow, made of football.

Try it: expect 100 fails first

The Elastico

⚽⚽⚽⚽

Push the ball one way, then SNAP it back the other way with the same foot — all in half a second. Ronaldinho's favourite toy.

Try it: against a wall first

The Bicycle Kick

⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽

Jump, flip backwards, and kick the ball over your own head mid-air. The rarest, most beautiful goal in football.

Try it: ONLY on a soft mattress!

The Panenka

⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽

A penalty chipped softly down the middle while the keeper dives away. Pure cheek. If it works you're a genius; if not… oops.

Try it: when nobody's watching

New word

Panna
The street-football name for a nutmeg. In panna games, one nutmeg = instant win. Shout “PANNA!” when you get one.

5 Chapter Five

Before Messi, There Were Legends

Ask a grandparent about these five. Watch their eyes light up.

1958
–70

Pelé

🇧🇷 Brazil

Won the World Cup at 17. Won it three times — still the only one ever. Scored over 1,000 goals (counting friendlies). Brazil calls him O Rei — The King.

1986

Diego Maradona

🇦🇷 Argentina

In one 1986 match he scored the sneaky “Hand of God” goal… then, four minutes later, ran 60 metres and dribbled past five Englishmen — including the goalkeeper — for the Goal of the Century. Villain and hero in the same match.

1974

Johan Cruyff

🇳🇱 Netherlands

Invented the turn you just learned in Chapter 4. His Dutch team played “Total Football” — everyone attacks, everyone defends. Football's greatest thinker.

1998
–06

Zinedine Zidane

🇫🇷 France

Scored 2 goals in the 1998 World Cup final and a famous flying volley in a Champions League final. The ball obeyed him like a pet.

2002

Ronaldo — the FIRST one

🇧🇷 Brazil

Before Cristiano, “Ronaldo” meant R9 of Brazil: 2 goals in the 2002 World Cup final and defenders left sitting on the grass. Ask about the haircut too.

2005

Ronaldinho

🇧🇷 Brazil

Played football like it was recess. Elasticos, no-look passes, always grinning. He was so magical that even Real Madrid's fans stood and clapped him — and he played for Barcelona!

New word

GOAT
Greatest Of All Time. Pelé? Maradona? Messi? Every generation argues. Now you can argue with facts.

6 Chapter Six

The Greatest Games Ever Played

Four true stories. No made-up book is this good.

Champions League final · Istanbul 2005

Liverpool3 – 3AC Milan

Liverpool were losing 0–3 at half-time. Finished. Dead. Then they scored 3 goals in 6 crazy minutes, took it to penalties… and won. Never, ever stop playing.

La Remontada · Barcelona 2017

Barcelona6 – 1PSG

Barcelona lost the first game 0–4. To go through they needed to win by FIVE clear goals. With 2 minutes left they still needed 3 more… and scored all three. The stadium nearly exploded.

World Cup semi-final · Brazil 2014

Brazil1 – 7Germany

Mighty Brazil, at home, in a World Cup semi-final… lost 1–7. Germany scored 5 goals in 18 minutes. Proof that in football, ANYTHING can happen — even to the best.

The 5000-to-1 miracle · England 2016

Leicester City🏆Premier League

Little Leicester had 5000-to-1 odds — the bookies gave the SAME odds for finding Elvis alive. They beat every giant in England and won the whole league. The greatest underdog story in sport.

New word

Comeback
Winning a game you were losing badly. The greater the comeback, the longer people talk about it. Istanbul was 20 years ago — still talking.

New word

A match between two clubs from the SAME city — like Real Madrid vs Atlético, or Bengaluru FC vs Chennaiyin in the ISL. The loudest games of the year.

8 Chapter Eight

The Women's Game Is On Fire

👑 The best player on Earth

Aitana Bonmatí of Spain has won the women's Ballon d'Or 3 times in a row. Only two men EVER managed three in a row: Platini and Messi. That's the company she keeps. Tiny, quick, sees passes nobody else sees.

🏆 Who rules right now

Spain are the world champions — remember, Spain holds BOTH World Cups, men's and women's, at the same time. First country ever! But England won Euro 2025, beating Spain on penalties. The next Women's World Cup: Brazil, 2027 — the first ever in South America.

🇮🇳 And India's women?

Big news: India's women qualified for the Asian Cup for the first time in 23 years! Sangita Basfore scored twice against Thailand to seal it. The team is climbing — watch this space.

Wow fact: exactly 91,648 fans once packed Barcelona's Camp Nou for a women's match — a world record for the women's game. It's the fastest-growing sport on the planet.

New word

Treble
Winning THREE big trophies in one season — league, cup and Champions League. Bonmatí's Barcelona have done it. Almost impossible. Almost.
